Community Officer Drug Education (CODE)

What is CODE?
CODE is a comprehensive drug education and prevention program for students in 5th
and 7th grade. The curriculum emphasizes the harmful effects, costs and consequences of tobacco, alcohol & other drug use. The program helps students develop refusal skills and positive alternatives to substance abuse.

CODE is different from other drug prevention programs offered in schools. It is delivered by Law Enforcement Officers so students will see police officers as a resource for information and a friendly, engaging, and caring person in the classroom as well as an enforcer of the law in their neighborhoods. Students will also develop a better understanding of legal & illegal drugs and their effects on families and the community.

Where is CODE taught?
CODE is taught in public and private schools in Greenville County, The City of Greenville, The City of Fountain Inn, and The City of Simpsonville.

How are Community Officers trained?
Greenville Family Partnership (GFP) provides comprehensive training and certification to Law Enforcement Officers, School Resource Officers (SRO's), and Community Patrol Officers. Once officers are trained they are certified by their agencies to deliver the program in schools. Police Departments or Law Enforcement Agencies schedule officers to work in the neighborhoods of the school to which they are assigned.

GFP provides at least one training each year and a re-certification day for the officers involved. Curriculum supplies, videos, and visual aids are purchased and maintained for officers' use.

Troy McBride, thirty-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department, is the presenter of the CODE program.
